1. Walking days
The walk is about 50 miles, which we did in 3½ days (4 days total including travel).
There are no prolongued ups or downs, but our days were quite long, and you could take
more time, maybe with some exploring (for example, a detour to the Roaches).
2. Getting there and away
From London: Train from Euston to Congleton; fast to Stoke-on-Trent, then local to Congleton.
Time: just under 2 hours.
Getting away: Train from Sheffield to London St Pancras; time just over 2.5 hours.
Ordnance Survey maps: 268 (Congleton); Explorer OL24 (The Peak District, White Peak);
Explorer OL1 (Dark Peak). Maps are essential as this is not a standard path, but route finding is not difficult.
4. The route: Prices quoted are of March 2012, for a double room.
am: Train to Congleton.
pm: Walk 8 miles to Wincle (4.5 hours): Cheshire Ring Canal Walk; Gritstone Trail/Staffordshire Way; Dane Valley Way.
Wincle accomodation: choice of farm or pub; we stayed at
Hill Top Farm, SK11 0QG. £75.
(Evening meal at the farm by request £14, or go back downhill to the pub.)

Day 2: Walk 13.5 miles Wincle to Chelmorton.
am: Walk 6 miles from Wincle to the Head of the River Manifold (3 hours): Dane Valley Way to Turn Edge; across the fields to Flash (pub closed);
minor road to the Head of River Manifold. Lunch pub:

pm: Walk about 7.5 miles Quarnfold to Chelmorton (4 hours): across the fields to the head of Hollinsclough Dale; down the Dale; across the fields
to Earl Sterndale; north to Brier Low; NE paths to Chelmorton. B&B at

Day 3: Walk 15.2 miles Chelmorton to Hathersage.
am: Walk 8.2 miles Chelmorton to Wardlow Mires (3.5 hours): east and then north up Sough Lane; left, then right at Blackwell, path to Chee Dale. East along the River Wye,
through Miller's Dale and Litton Mill; north up Cressbrook Dale to Wardlow Mires. Lunch at the
Three Stags' Heads, Wardlow Mires, DE4 2JY.
pm: Walk 7 miles Wardlow Mires to Hathersage (3.5 hours): footpath north to Grindlow; path and small road to Bretton; path north to Abney; across Offerton Moor;
down to the River Derwent; east into Hathersage. Accommodation: choice of Hathersage pubs and B&Bs; we stayed at the Little John Hotel, Hathersage, S32 1DD. Tel 01433 650 225.
Day 4: Walk 13 miles Hathersage to Sheffield.
am: Walk 5.5 miles Hathersage to Longshaw (3 hours): path north past Brookfield Manor up to Stanage Edge; path SE along the Edge, over
Higgar Tor and Carl Wark, to the
Fox House Inn.
pm: Walk 7.5 miles to Sheffield (4 hours): across Houndkirk Moor to Ringinglow; just to the north there is a 'green' path into town.
