1. Walking days
We walked for an hour out of Petersfield on day 1 to get to Buriton for the night, making a total of three days including travel, but it could be done in two. It's about 23 miles.
It could also be done as an extension to The Hangers Way (from Alton), making 4 days in all.
2. Getting there and away
From London: Train from London Waterloo to Petersfield; just over an 1 hour.
Getting away: Train from Chichester to London Victoria or Waterloo; 2.5 hours (we had to take a Sunday replacement bus service to Littlehampton and then get the train).
3. Leaflet & Map
The Staunton Way leaflet from Hamshire County Council gives a good idea of the first part of the walk: www3.hants.gov.uk/staunton-way.pdf.
The Ordnance Survey map 120 (Chichester) is essential.

Variation, February 2025
At the first sign of warmth we took the train to Petersfield but stayed in South Harting (The White Hart, nice pub) - 4 miles. Next day we walked various paths to the west of the road to lunch at West Marden (another nice pub, the Victoria Inn). Then west to Finchdean to approach Rowlands Castle from the north along the Sussex border path (10 miles). Train back to London. The paths varied in scenicness but it was great to be out in open spaces. Our opinion of Rowlands Castle hasn't changed since 2012 (see the Narrative).
